Importance of oil-water separation processes is rapidly increasing in modern industry. This family of processes, in fact, is of fundamental importance in solving problems in several industrial sectors among which, for instance: the management of oil spills, accidental industrial waste-water dispersions, water treatment industry, engine fuel filtration and oil sands tailing technology. This paper presents and discusses the Biologically Inspired Design approach, based on Biomimicry Thinking (BT), that has been followed to design an innovative and sustainable oil-water separation device, as well as the device itself. Besides the advantages of integrating linguistic tools and brainstorming within the BT approach, the importance of manufacturing technologies is also discussed. The practical realization of the developed solution, in fact, relies on the latest advancements in the Additive Manufacturing field.
